- Preface:
- During the Fifteenth Joint Meeting at the U.S. - Japan Panel on Wind and Seismic Effects
of the UJNR held at Tsukuba, Japan May 17-20, 1983, several of the papers were devoted to
bridge earthquake engineering. As a result of the mutual beneficial interaction which took
place between the bridge engineering communities of both countries at the May, 1983, UJNR
meeting, it was suggested that it would be very beneficial to hold a workshop in the near
future where topics on bridge earthquake engineering could be more fully explored. The
First USA - Japan Bridge Engineering workshop resulted from this suggestion. The financial
sponsor for the US participants was the NSF through a grant CEE 8318486 awarded to the
University of Nevada at Reno (Preface by authors).
